narratives for a post fossil horizon

Begleitendes Wahlfach zum M1 "Postfossile Strukturen"

What can imagining possible future infrastructures in the North Sea teach us, if we understand them not only as technical devices, but also as constructions shaped by physical labour, political governance, and economic contingencies? Can asking how they will be used, maintained, or regulated help us better grasp the conditions that might sustain their construction and operation, and the consequences they may have for the human and non-human actors living alongside them?

The course is closely tied to the design studio M1 "Postfossile Strukturen" led by Professor Gustav Düsing. Students will learn to approach architectural projects not as autonomous objects, detached from the conditions of their production and use, but as relational constructs embedded in wider constellations of actors and institutions. Focusing on a specific figure, event, object, or document, they will devise a parallel narrative that accompanies the project as it develops, using both text and images. Proposed readings, films, and lectures will accompany the seminar. Assessment will take place alongside the design studio review, during which students will present both the architectural proposal and their understanding of the broader discourse within which it might be embedded.
